Aufteilung der Festplatten und Installationsreihenfolge
Der Client verfügt über zwei 250 GB SATA Festplatten. Die erste Festplatte (sda) wird für Linux, die zeite (sdb) für Windows XP und Vista verwendet. Diese Reihenfolge ist einzuhalten, da der Bootloader Grub auf der ersten Festplatte im MBR liegt. Wären die Platten vertauscht, würde Grub den windowseigenen Bootloader im MBR der ersten Platte überschreiben und Windows nicht problemlos booten. Ein weiterer Vorteil ist, dass man eine defekte Platte einfach abtrennen kann und das System automatisch Windows oder Linux von der noch verbleibenden Platte booten kann.
Die Betriebssysteme müssen in folgender Reihenfolge installiert werden, zuerst Windows XP, dann Windows Vista und dann erst Linux (SuSE 10.3 und evtl. andere). Während der Installation der Windowssysteme muss die erste Platte (die für Linux) physikalisch vom SATA-Bus getrennt werden(der untere Stecker am Mainboard mit der Bezeichnung SATA 0), damit Windows nicht auf die erste Platte (Linux) seinem MBR schreibt. XP muss vor Vista installiert werden, damit Vista XP in seinen Bootloader integrieren kann, umgekehrt geht dies nicht problemlos.
Mit der XP-Installations-CD wird auf der zweiten Platte (sdb) eine 100000 MB große Partition (C: bzw. sdb1) für XP erstellt und eine zweite Partition (D: bzw. sdb2) mit dem restlichen Speicher (13x,y GB) für Windows Vista erstellt.
